Cabinetry comes in SO many colors and finishes! Which one should you choose? What are the pros and cons of the different styles?
Before we start talking about finishes and colors, we need to inform ourselves about the characteristics of wood. Because all cabinetry is constructed using multiple pieces of wood, each piece of wood is unique because each tree is unique. We love the natural variations in wood such as veining, knots, pinholes and sap runs; however, these beautiful characteristics will effect how the wood takes paint and stain in addition to its aging and the effect light has on it.
STAIN: Is beautiful and will show off all the uniqueness that wood has to offer! When using stains we have to remember that each piece will take the stain differently and their is no guarantee each piece will match perfectly. This natural variation shows of the beautiful characteristic of the wood and is not considered a defect.
PAINTED FINISH: Has a more symmetrical coverage over the cabinets. Paint will also allow for more color options than stains. This being said, paint will accentuate minor wood properties such as grain wave, depressions, minor dents and other imperfections. It is also worth noting that matte finishes will show less wear and imperfections than high gloss finishes.
GLAZED FINISH: Is the process beginning with the wood undergoing the standard finishing process, the glaze color is applied then hand wiped off. Glaze detailing is hand applied and "hangs up" in any corner or profile of the door or drawer front. The less detail to a door or drawer front, the less apparent the glaze finish will be and a flat or "slab" door or drawer front will not show very much glazing.
In addition to all the above options, you can do Foil Finishes which come in a wide range of colors and styles (even wood look) or Distressed Finishes to help you achieve your aesthetic goals.
* It is important to note that all wood will be negatively effected by a non-climate controlled atmosphere and humidity.
