This 1976 illustration highlights one of our most iconic species, the American alligator, alongside purple gallinules and lily pads.

Once listed as a federally endangered species, the story of the American alligator is one of conservation success! They now thrive in all 67 counties across the state at an estimated 1.3 million of every size. To manage our healthy alligator population, we use an approach that incorporates alligator research, law enforcement, sustainable harvest programs, and our proactive Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program (SNAP). American alligators are Florida’s state reptile because they are a symbol of the resilience of our wild lands and the importance of thoughtful wildlife management.
