In the last few weeks of pregnancy, it’s common for providers to start offering (or performing) vaginal exams at every appointment.

But here’s what many people don’t realize 👇

✨ They’re not medically necessary for everyone.
Vaginal exams can be uncomfortable and don’t predict when labor will start. You can be 3 cm dilated for weeks or go from 0 to baby in a day.

✨ They tell us very little about timing.
A vaginal exam only shows what’s happening right now, not what’s about to happen. For many people they cause more discomfort than benefit.

✨ There’s a time and place for exams.
They can be helpful when gathering information to make a plan, like checking dilation, effacement, or baby’s position when an induction is necessary or when you’re deciding with your provider which route to take. But they’re not routine requirements, and you always have the right to decline.

⚠️ Consent always matters.
Sadly, some people have had providers say they’re “just doing a quick exam,” but then sweep their membranes without consent. This is not okay. Membrane sweeping should always be discussed and agreed upon before it happens.

Your body. Your birth. Your choice.
Understanding your options and giving informed consent at every step is key to a positive birth experience.

In our Birth Boot Camp classes, we teach you what’s standard vs. optional, how to ask the right questions, and how to advocate for yourself with confidence.
