What is dissociative amnesia? “Dissociative amnesia is a type of dissociative disorder that involves inability to recall important personal information that would not typically be lost with ordinary forgetting. It is usually caused by trauma or stress.”-Merck Manual “Our findings provide direct evidence that memory repression in dissociative amnesia is associated with an altered pattern of neural activity, and they suggest the possibility that the pFC has an important role in inhibiting the activity of the hippocampus in memory repression.”-Pub Med For many with a history of trauma, there are memories that are shut out, often leaving them with limited childhood memories. This can create shame, disbelief, and confusion about what happened and why they are the way they are. Please know and take in…that this was a protective feature of the brain to avoid devastation and allow for daily functioning. And know that you can still heal. With implicit memory, versus explicit memory, we heal the trauma by using the body and allowing reconnection, discharging, and a creation of safety connected to breath. This is the practice of trauma informed yoga.
