To ‘take the stairs’ is an adage that suggests that there’s no easy way of realizing one’s goal. That by focusing on the process of creating over the final product, one is more likely to question, learn, and discover.

To that end, the design and layout of this quilt took several iterations. I was eager to explore (and maximize) the undulation of dark negative space that could be created by arranging squares of increasing, then decreasing size and color value into a maze of stairs that crawls across the quit top.

Here, and although maybe not obvious at first glance, the colored stair maze starts at the top left, finishes at the bottom right, and meanders across the quit taking 90 and 180 degree turns at various points to fill the space.

This design was inspired by an architectural poster by Bruno Morassutti and Enzo Mari, Domus 428, 1965.

Those are perfectly parallel 3/8” quilting lines which also turn and twist across the quilt top following the maze of stairs. (That’s right!! Look closely 🕵️‍♂️🤯)

We decided on that spacing because each of the colored blocks in this quilt are 3/8” different from one another, so the quilting lines hit each sized block in exactly the same place. 🕵️‍♂️🤯
