This is going to be a long post about the great then worrisome weekend at Silver Bay KC Del Mar Fairgrounds.
My young dog Tommy was entered in rally and started acting very strange on Saturday morning. I went into my first class and he was almost disoriented. I pulled him from the rest of the day and watched him …he laid down, was lethargic, very glassy eyed and drooling.
Long story short he spent a day the vets office. His x-ray showed that the gut motility had completely stopped likely because of whatever he had ingested. We will never know exactly what it was, but the vet tends to think that it was either some kind of ma*****na (gummy) or possibly some kind of op**te. There is no place to take your dogs there to the bathroom except in the bushes.I am very careful and watch them like a hawk, but that doesn’t mean they can’t grab something while they’re sniffing and swallow it quickly. Fortunately, there was no long-term damage to his liver or kidneys, and after we got things moving, he cleared his entire bowel out of any leftover toxins. He is once again bright eyed and bushy tailed. I’m feeding him very carefully small meals because his digestion was so compromised. He said he was fine to take to the shows this weekend….Just make sure that he feels good.
At home and on walks I use an OutFox Field Guard mask on my dogs. They are created to keep FoxTails out of the face and ears, but I use them so that the dogs do not pick up anything and ingest something they shouldn’t…. now they will be on at the dog show. There is a friend at our hunting group that lost his golden several weeks ago from him eating coyote s**t that had sago palm seeds in it. It was devastating💔 please be ever vigilant. I know I’m going to even be more so!
