As summer begins the Wantagh Fire Department would like to share some tips for a safe grilling season. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), gas grills are the cause of an average of 9,079 home fires, 4,454 structure fires, and 4,625 outdoor fires annually.
While Cooking/General Tips
• Grills should only be used outdoors.
• Keep grills at least 10 feet away from the home and other combustible materials.
• Grills should never be used or set up on porches, decks or under an overhang.
• Clean the grill before and after cooking to prevent grease build-up.
• Never leave a grill unattended while cooking or preheating.
• Children and pets should be kept at least 3 feet away from the grilling area and grilling equipment, including propane tanks.
• Keep a fire extinguisher nearby when grilling.
• Avoid grilling when consuming excessive alcohol which can cause a lack of good judgement.
Propane Grills
• Inspect tank & hose for leaks before using it. Apply a soap and water solution to the connections. Bubbles may indicate a leak.
• Open the grill when lighting.
• If it smells like gas while cooking, safely turn off the grill if you can and call 911 from a safe location.
• Do not smoke while handling a propane tank.
• If the flame goes out, turn the gas off and wait at least five minutes before re-lighting.
• When storing propane, keep in a cool, dry place outdoors.
• Always turn the gas supply off at the tank when done grilling.
Charcoal Grills
• Only use charcoal starter fluid when starting a charcoal grill. Do not use gasoline or other lighter fluids.
• Keep charcoal starter fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.
• Let the coals cool completely before disposing.
• Dispose of coals in a metal container.

On Thursday, June 18, 2026, the Wantagh Fire Department conducted a Helicopter and Marine Unit training exercise at Wantagh Park in conjunction with members of the Nassau County Police Department Aviation Bureau and Marine Bureau.
The training was coordinated by Wantagh Fire Department Marine Unit Coordinator William Van Leer and the Nassau County Police Department as part of the department’s ongoing commitment to training and operational readiness. The exercise provided firefighters and EMS personnel with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the capabilities, procedures, and resources of both specialized units.
As the Wantagh Fire Department provides emergency response coverage for Jones Beach State Park, TOBAY Beach, and extensive South Shore waterways, members frequently work alongside the Nassau County Police Department and other agencies during emergencies and large-scale special events, including the Jones Beach Air Show and Fourth of July fireworks displays.
Participants received an up-close look at a Nassau County Police Department helicopter and were provided instruction on the Aviation Bureau’s functions and responsibilities, landing zone safety, and procedures for safely approaching and operating around aircraft. Members then met with representatives from the Marine Bureau, who discussed the capabilities of their various vessels and emphasized the importance of interoperability and interagency training during complex water rescue and emergency operations.
The Chiefs and members of the Wantagh Fire Department extend their sincere appreciation to the officers of the Nassau County Police Department Aviation Bureau and Marine Bureau for taking the time to share their knowledge, expertise, and experience with our members.
