The unique confectionery tin designed by Escher in 1962/3 was commissioned by Verblifa to mark the company’s 75th anniversary. Each tin was to be filled with bonbons for employees, clients and business associates. Escher challenged the company to turn an icosahedron into a relatively small production run of 7,000. Considered a technological tour de force, Escher soon informed them that he had devised a solution for the production run with relatively little wasted material. “We were literally ‘looking at a Herculean challenge; 20 triangular faces, 30 ribs and 12 vertices, with 5-fold symmetry around each vertice, a feat never before accomplished in 75 years of tin manufacturing, and presumably never before then either.”

M.C Escher’s “lithograph “ Order and Chaos” illustrates the duality of our perception of the world. All around us we see fragments of daily life: crumpled paper, some cast-off string, a pipe with a broken bowl. All these things reflect in the center org. Within everything there exist perfect atoms and crystalline forms.
