Located in the Old City of Damascus, Souq Al Hamidiya is the largest and longest souq (or market) in Syria. Covered by a corrugated steel roof, the 600-meter long market houses hundreds of vendors that sell a myriad of products, such as spices, clothes, traditional crafts and jewelry, and cafés, grocery stores, food stalls, and ice cream parlors. Perhaps the most well-known shop in the market is Bakdash, seller of the Harmoush Syrian booza (ice cream).

The market, constructed in 1780 under Ottoman rule and opened in 1880, stretches from Al Thawra Street and ends at the Umayyad Mosque plaza and the Temple of Jupiter, which was built by the Romans during the rule of Augustus and completed during the rule of Constantius II. Smaller adjacent markets, such as Al Bzourita - the spice souq. The souq’s hustle and bustle provide an escape where many Damascenes go to find street food, have a coffee, and meet old and new friends. -

The Ancient City of Damascus, locally known as "Dimashq Al Qadimah," is located in the center of the capital of Syria. Founded in the 3rd millennium B.C, Damascus is considered one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.

Numerous archaeological sites, including antique churches and mosques, can be found in Damascus' old city. In addition, many cultures, particularly Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic, have left their imprint. As a result, the city has around 125 monuments from different civilizations and periods of its history. Famous monuments include the remains of the Temple of Jupiter and the Umayyad Mosque, known as the great mosque of Damascus.

UNESCO designated the city's historic core, enclosed by Roman-era fortifications, as a World Heritage Site in 1979.
