California's transportation infrastructure plays a crucial role in facilitating the movement of millions of people and billions of dollars in freight daily. However, significant challenges persist.
Currently, 58% of California’s major locally and state-maintained roads are classified as in poor or mediocre condition. This deficiency results in an estimated annual cost of 100 billion dollars to California drivers, stemming from higher vehicle repair expenses, traffic congestion delays, increased fuel consumption, and an elevated risk of traffic crashes.
From 2021 to 2025, there were 20,727 traffic fatalities in California and from 2020 to 2024, nearly one-third of those killed in motorized vehicle crashes were pedestrians or bicyclists, highlighting safety concerns.
