WASHINGTON, DC (May 14, 2025)— The funeral for former Secretary of Labor, Alexis M. Herman, first African American Secretary of Labor, was held at Washington National Cathedral where a gathering of family, friends and former colleagues from the Carter and Clinton administrations as well of those she worked with in business and served with on a variety of boards. President Clinton delivered a moving tribute and her mentee and friend Rev. Leah Daughtry gave the homily. I had the pleasure of not only knowing and working with her for 40 years, but also assisting with her final celebration of life. Her mentor, Dr. Dorothy Height’s funeral was also held at the National Cathedral. According to my research including Dr. Height and Alexis Herman, three other prominent women have had funerals at the National Cathedral and one had a memorial. Those who had funerals include Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor (first woman to serve on the Supreme Court), Secretary Madeleine Albright (first female Secretary of State), and Edith Wilson, former First Lady and wife of President Woodrow Wilson. Eleanor Roosevelt, the former First Lady, had a memorial service at the Cathedral in 1962.
