Combatting the s*xual exploitation of children nationwide

11/27/2024

Holidays are hectic… but don’t forget that you are the best parental control. Predators know you’re distracted, and your children are entertaining themselves. Know who they’re talking to and when.

Stop Child Predators began in 2006, after 9-year old Jessica Lunsford was kidnapped, r***d, and murdered by a twice-convicted registered s*x offender who was living at a different, unregistered address. At the time, most child s*x offenders served only three months of their seven-year sentences, according to research from the Department of Justice.

We took action, and through our state advocacy, crafted The Sexual Offenses Against Children Act, which mandates a minimum 25-year prison sentence and lifetime electronic monitoring for adults convicted of lewd and lascivious acts against a child under the age of 12. That legislation passed in 46 states.

More than 15 years later, child victimization has dramatically changed from stranger abductions across the street to grooming and luring across the world through the internet. An analysis by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children found that 98% of reported online offenders were seemingly unknown to the child offline. Additionally, online predation incidences increased by 97.5% between 2019 and 2020.

We want to make sure children’s safety online is a big part of that conversation.

And so, we have identified key policy areas for meaningful impact, expanded our leadership, and are working to galvanize our community of children’s advocates, like you.
