Your teeth could be losing enamel while you sleep.

When you eat close to bedtime and lie down, food sits in your stomach instead of digesting. Stomach acid creeps up overnight, and your enamel takes the hit on the way.

There are a few things you can do to protect your teeth. Eat a bit earlier in the evening if possible, so that you're upright for at least an hour after you eat. Chew sugar-free gum before bed to neutralize the acid. Also, don't brush right after eating. (Weird, I know!) Wait about 30 minutes, and then brush. That gives your enamel time to recover from the acid attack.

If you often wake up with a funky taste in your mouth, that's an early sign you might have acid issues. Call 202-529-6468. We'll take a look and help ensure your teeth and gums stay healthy.
