What does Sunday's Gospel have to say about the way we approach our work on Monday morning?

Quite a lot, actually!

In the Parable of the Sower, one of the few parables Christ explains in full (Matthew 13:18-23), the seed is the word of God, and the four soils represent four different ways of receiving it. Christ makes clear that hearing God's word is only the beginning. We are called to understand it, let it take root, and allow it to bear fruit in our lives.

"But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold." (Matthew 13:23)

That same call extends into our daily work. Whether we're leading a team, serving clients, raising a family, or studying for exams, the question remains: Are we living our vocation with intention, or simply moving from one task to the next?

In Laborem Exercens, Saint John Paul II reminds us that the human person is the subject of work, never merely its instrument. Our work is not simply measured by what we accomplish, but by the kind of people we become through it.

The rich soil of the parable has been cleared of what would choke its growth: distraction, anxiety, and discouragement. The same is true of meaningful work. Lasting fruitfulness rarely comes from intensity alone. It grows from the quiet discipline of remaining attentive, faithful, and open to God's grace, day after day.

As another workweek begins, may we strive to cultivate the rich soil that allows God's word to take root and bear lasting fruit in everything we do.
