🧫 Think your tissue cultures are contamination-free?
Think again.
By the time contamination becomes obvious, it may have already spread through your culture vessel and put your experiment at risk.
The good news? Early detection can help you save time, resources, and valuable plant material.
Here are 5 ways to spot contamination before it becomes a major problem:
1. Look for Cloudy Media
Healthy media should remain clear. If it starts looking hazy, cloudy, or milky, bacterial contamination may already be present—even before you see visible colonies.
2. Watch for Unusual Growth
Keep an eye out for small white, yellow, black, or fuzzy colonies appearing on the media, vessel walls, or explants. Fungi and bacteria can spread quickly once established.
3. Monitor Plant Appearance
Your plants often show signs of stress before contamination becomes visible. Unexpected yellowing, browning, stunted growth, or declining health can all be warning signs.
4. Inspect Cultures Daily Under Good Light
A quick daily check can make a big difference. Good lighting helps reveal subtle changes that might otherwise go unnoticed.
5. Check Around the Base of Shoots and Roots
Some contaminants hide near the media surface, roots, or shoot bases. Look closely for slime, discoloration, tiny moving particles, or suspicious growth around explants.
The earlier you catch contamination, the better your chances of preventing it from spreading and affecting the rest of your cultures.
