We are State Voices, a network of state coalitions fighting for a healthy democracy and freedom.

Too often, district maps representing BIPOC and working communities are manipulated to favor one political party over another. Fair maps that accurately and equitably count our voices can make the difference in whether our communities have what we need to thrive.

To further understand how pro-democracy advocates are responding to this moment, State Voices asked Jennie Fisher of Alabama Forward, Angela Lin of Ohio Voice, and Ashley Shelton of the Power Coalition for their perspectives and lessons gained through the movements for fair maps.

Everybody should eat, not just billionaires.

To sustain their basic needs, 42 million people rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) every month. The government’s suspension of SNAP benefits in November will devastate lower income families who are already struggling to make ends meet.

SNAP is being cut off because billionaires and greedy politicians in our government would rather bicker and debate than work together for the common good, leading to barriers to vital resources. But human rights are not debatable. We all deserve to have our basic needs met like affordable housing, health care, and FOOD. This is the season for community aid and demanding

Please look up mutual aid networks in your community to help make sure we all can survive. We can eat together, learn together, and fight for our rights together.
