When hundreds of millions of gallons of sewage spewed into the Potomac River this past January, no one could have guessed that the impacts would continue to be felt on nearby communities nearly half a year later. PRKN estimates that impacted businesses, organizations, and individuals are facing up to $140 million, or more, in total economic losses as a result of this incident – and yet we haven’t seen any plans to rectify this. Potomac communities deserve better, and they deserve for their voices to be heard.

This is why PRKN is joining legal actions against DC Water – to ensure that impacted community voices are represented at the negotiation table, and they are not left out when it comes time for a resolution. These aren’t just stories; they are real experiences from people, families, and businesses facing the consequences of neglect.

As part of our Splash and Dash series this year, we are partnering with the DC Aquatics Club on their annual All Out Open Water Swim (formerly DCAC's Swim for Life)! This fundraiser and swim event will support both Potomac Riverkeeper Network's mission and the LGBTQIA+ community.

Join us in TWO WEEKS on Saturday, August 1st for this unique opportunity to open swim in the Potomac River along beautiful National Harbor.

💧 NOTE: We know many still have concerns about river safety following the Potomac Interceptor sewage spill that occurred in January. We have been regularly testing the water quality at National Harbor since late January, and the site has only failed once in the last 6 months. PRKN will be continue conducting water quality testing throughout the summer as well as PRIOR to the event to ensure bacteria levels are within recreational limits. 💧
