The iconic mural at Ben’s Chili Bowl is coming down after nearly a decade, and as part of their May 1 grand reopening, they’re launching .

They’re asking YOU who should be honored next. From artists and activists to DC legends, athletes, and historical figures—all ideas are welcome (even past honorees!).

The countdown is on—filmmakers have until May 9 to submit!
The Valley Place Arts Collaborative is bringing back Anacostia Shorts 2026, its fourth annual short film contest in partnership with the Open Road Film Festival. This celebration of storytelling highlights films shot in Anacostia or rooted in the community, with a special welcome to creators from across the DMV.

📅 Festival Dates: May 30 – June 1, 2026
🎥 In-Person Screenings: May 30 & 31 at Honfleur Gallery + filmmaker Q&A
💻 Virtual Screening: June 1 (6–8:30 PM on YouTube)

First Place: $1,000

The Anacostia Shorts Annual Film Festival is now accepting submissions for its 2026 program, taking place May 30–June 1, 2026. This three-day hybrid festival celebrates short films by DMV filmmakers while also showcasing selected national and international work.

The festival includes two in-person screenings on Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31, held at Honfleur Gallery, followed by filmmaker Q&As, and a virtual screening on Monday, June 1, live streamed on Open Road’s YouTube channel with limited-time on-demand access.

Local filmmakers competing in the Anacostia Shorts Competition are eligible for cash prizes, including $1,000 for first place, while all selected films will be considered for Best of the Fest and Audience Favorite awards.

There’s still time to experience “In No Certain Order,” the solo exhibition by T Yuan Chi Nicholson on view at Honfleur Gallery — but not for long.

The exhibition closes Saturday, January 17, with a closing reception from 3:00–5:00 PM, featuring conversation and light refreshments. The reception is free and open to the public.
