Character is something that is gained, not something that is given~ The opportunity to become a person of character is never truly lost, not even in our failures or in our moments of tragedy.
(Reference: Exodus 2. 11-22, Moses was a man of character who was chosen by God in the beginning and who made mistakes along the way... but God redeemed it for the good.)
