Children and adults modem spring fashions in May 1950 at Asbury United Methodist, sponsored by the Women’s Society of Christian Service.

Second photo: From left are Mrs. Walter Robinson, Mrs. Charles A. Barkley, Beverly Henderson and Mrs. Frank Martin. I wish I could share their names but when you got married in the past, the newspaper only notes you by your husband’s name.

Mrs. John S. Martin measures a Christmas Cactus given to her as a 5-inch shoot on her honeymoon in Casterland on Nov 18, 1913. Since that day, which was 39 years before this 1952 photo was taken, the plant had grown to be a meter across.

Hersal Charlton and two of his sons picket outside the public school on Arsenal Street in May 1969 in protest of their being denied access to the public school in Watertown.
According to an article that ran with the pictures in the Watertown Daily Times, the superintendent said the boys had moved outside the school boundaries. Their father argued the two boys had been denied an education because of their intellectual disabilities.
The two boys had a third identical triplet brother not part of the protest (not sure why). The three of them are all in a photo on the sign.
I don’t know the outcome of the protest, but it seems Mr. Charlton cared a lot about his children, and I have to admire him standing up for what he believed was right.
