Talk about a terrarium that rocks! For , Rose built this bioactive baby scorpion-tailed gecko tank with the species’ needs in mind. Using a bioactive substrate and plants from The Bio Dude, she created a habitat that will not only meet the temperature and humidity requirements but will also provide naturalistic enrichment.
Rocks make a huge difference for lizards that spend their days basking, climbing, and hiding in crevices in their native environment. Attaching bits of rock, such as lava or slate, to the tank’s background makes efficient use of space by creating another surface for them to climb. Including elevation variations with branches offers the critters more choices for where to hang out to find the exact temperature and humidity they want at any given moment.
In addition to staple flora choices for low-moisture, higher-temperature tanks such as aloe, agave, and haworthia, Rose also utilized tillandsia. Tillandsia are especially useful in arid setups because, as epiphytes, they can be mounted directly onto wood and rock to provide extra visual barriers and pops of color.
