Scared Students Commit Su***de Across Tamil Nadu Due to Board Results

CHENNAI: Failure in the Class XII examination and a morbid fear of flunking seem to have driven at least seven students across the State to take the extreme step. Two students, who ended their lives out of fear, did pass the exam, though it was too late by then.

Two other students tried to commit su***de, but fortunately survived.

In Tiruchy, Aishwariya (17) committed su***de on April 30 by setting herself ablaze after a tiff with her mother over the Class XII examination. She scored 939 marks and was the school topper. The girl’s su***de came to light when district social welfare officials contacted her mother to inform her about Aishwariya’s achievement on Friday.

In Vellore district, heartbroken by their failure in Class XII, J Raghu (18) and N Gunasekaran (17) of Nellorepet Government Higher Secondary School, Gudiyattam Taluk, killed themselves on Thursday afternoon.

In Thanjavur, a student who failed in five out of six subjects committed su***de. In Tirunelveli, an 18-year-old girl student from Ayikudi, who failed in two subjects, committed su***de by jumping into a well on Thursday evening.

In Madurai, Class XII student Ajith’s playful behaviour ended in tragedy. Fearing he might fail, Ajith consumed insecticide two days before the result believing it would distract his parents, and they won’t scold him even if he failed. “When my son was semiconscious in the ICU, he begged us to save him,” said his tearful father M Shankar, who is a grocer. However, Ajith died on Tuesday.

In Theni, Ajay (17) of Ganeshapuram and a student of Government School committed su***de, though it later emerged that he had passed the exam.

Meanwhile, two Class XII girl students, upset over their poor score, attempted su***de in Nagercoil. Fortunately both of them survived.
