In September 2014, Beverly Carter—a top-producing REALTOR® and mother—ended her workday like many others. She had a showing scheduled, planned to stop for dinner afterward, and even won a small office contest that day. But that appointment turned out to be nothing of the ordinary and became fatal. Beverly’s clients, a man and a woman who claimed they were relocating, were not buyers at all, but kidnappers. They abducted Beverly, tried to ransom her, then murdered her when their plan unraveled. She was found days later in a shallow grave.

Her husband, Carl Carter, of nearly 35 years, saw more than love lost… he saw a broken system. Despite Beverly following many standard safety practices, they weren’t enough. From the way appointments were set, to how showing homes alone was treated, exposures were everywhere. That’s why Carl founded the Beverly Carter Foundation: to shine a light on what REALTORS® must do to stay safe physically and digitally.
