We found a caterpillar on some weedy queen Anne’s lace at the end of summer 2022 and it swiftly spun a cocoon and went to sleep for the last 9 months.
I just about gave up on it until one day last week until the chrysalis started to change from brown to black, and then upon coming home from work and summer camp one day last week, my boys and I discovered it had come out to meet us. I’m still amazed every single time I see this beautiful transformation.
I also promised my husband I wouldn’t bring any bugs into the house this year. We’ll see how that goes.

Setting the table vs. sitting at the table. Thank you October and for the Fall flowers, foliage and feels.
Nature finds a way to surprise me every day! We’ve raised countless monarchs over the years but have rarely been able to see the place they choose to make their amazing transformation in the wild before they’re gobbled up by the birds. Determined to survive, this one still has a bit of work to do but we were happy to watch it wiggle its way from caterpillar to chrysalis behind a ragosa rose leaf in the front garden.
I can’t speak highly enough about incorporating native plants into your home landscape. They bring so much life and activity to your home and can bring these magical moments within reach for you and your children. ✨
