Seven Seeds Acupuncture

Did you know that acupuncture can get muscles firing again that have become inhibited due to injury or other dysfunction?

I received this lovely note in my email inbox last week. My patient is a 63-year-old female with a chief complaint of pain and weakness in her arm. After limited success strengthening her shoulder with physical therapy, she came to me for support.

Orthopedic testing revealed that the rotator cuff muscle responsible for raising her arm (the supraspinatus) had almost zero strength. After a targeted acupuncture treatment to that muscle, we re-tested the muscle, and there was a night and day difference. My patient was very surprised!

This wasn't a case of muscle atrophy and weakness—it was a case of muscle inhibition. Prior to treatment, the muscle simply wasn't able to contract well. Once we rehabbed its ability to fire on command, it became responsive again and she had the experience of her shoulder "coming back online." It was an exciting moment, and the effects lasted!

Best of all, this essential rotator cuff muscle will now support her ability to lift her arm up and she is a huge step closer to resolving her shoulder dysfunction and arm pain.

Her progress will also be accelerated with her PT appointments, because the muscle will be able to participate in the movements and will, therefore, have the ability to gain strength. (How can a muscle gain strength if it is offline and unable to contract?)
