" If you've been watching Ken Burns' series on Country Music, you may have perked up when Milford, Kansas came onto the screen along with Doc Brinkley, the Goat Gland Doctor. He put the first commercial radio station on the air in Kansas (KFKB - Kansas First, Kansas Best, 1923) and later, when regulators shut him down, moved across the Mexican border, where he operated XERA, pulling in performers like the Carter family as he cranked up the power to 500,000 watts & blasted the signal across the continent. Back in 1986, I put together a documentary about Brinkley's escapades when KTWU program director Dave Pomeroy invited me to make use of materials he and Jim Reardon been collecting, including interviews with Minnie Brinkley and her son, “Johnny Boy,” shot at their home in Del Rio, Texas. We asked Ralph Titus (KSAC/KKSU) to narrate. The show is still available from KTWU on DVD, and it's also up on YouTube. This link will take you to a portion of the show that focuses on XER (later XERA) - the Sunshine Station Between the Nations. "
