Ume plum trees are back!
Prunus mume is a lovely, small tree 15-30 feet tall, which blooms in late winter or early spring. Its single, almond scented blooms may vary in color from tree to tree, presenting white, deep pink/red or shades of pink between. Its fruits are often referred to as plums, though they are more closely related to the apricot. They are the much-loved Ume plums used to make Japanese plum wine and other liquors, syrups, jams, and pickled umeboshi. Prunus mume are held in high esteem in Japan for Ikebana flower arranging and bonsai.
