XHV Electrode for Brookhaven National Laboratory ⚡
We recently had the privilege of manufacturing two extreme-high vacuum (XHV) electrode components for BNL. The electrode will operate inside an existing ANCORP spherical vacuum chamber located in the world’s highest-voltage, highest-intensity polarized photocathode electron gun for the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC).
The electrode features a 316LN ESR no-void stainless steel construction, which is a rare and highly specialized material provided by BNL. The electrode's role is crucial: generating an electric field and accelerating electrons within the gun.
Before final assembly, the BNL team follows a multi-step preparation process. This includes heating the electrode and other metal components to over 1,650°F (900°C) to remove trapped hydrogen and lower material permeability. They will also use a Jefferson Lab-developed polishing technique to achieve a mirror-smooth surface finish, which is essential for supporting the gun’s extreme high-voltage environment.
We’re proud to contribute to this groundbreaking project and look forward to seeing the incredible advancements the BNL team continues to make on the EIC!
