This week, the town of Murphy voted to transfer ownership of Fort Butler, a key site on the Trail of Tears, to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI).

Fort Butler was the regional headquarters for military removal operations to take over Cherokee land in Western North Carolina in the summer of 1838, and was where thousands of Cherokee began their forced march across the country to Oklahoma. Messages obtained by NC Local from the election liaison of the auditor’s office Dallas Woodhouse to the Jackson County Board of Elections chair Bill Thompson show Woodhouse telling Thompson to not hold the June 2nd vote on a polling location on Western Carolina University’s campus.

The location of the polling place has been a flashpoint in the debate over voting accessibility for young people.
