You should know Florence Price. 🎼
Florence Price was the first Black woman to have a symphony performed by a major American orchestra, the Chicago Symphony in 1933. She wrote more than 300 works. For decades after her death, most of them sat in an abandoned house in Illinois, water-damaged, nearly lost.
In recent years, her music has come back. Orchestras are performing her symphonies. Singers are finding her songs. And on July 23 in Dover, and perform four of those songs — Desire, An April Day, Out of the South, and Monologue for the Working Class — as part of Echoes of Freedom: An Operatic Reflection on 250 Years.
Price wrote about longing, beauty, and dignity during an era that withheld all three. That’s worth showing up for.
