Why the Angels Cry ‘Holy, Holy, Holy’ - Not ‘Love, Love, Love’ (And Why Modern Christianity Chokes on This)

(Repost from December 24, 2025)

Let’s get something straight at the outset…

If you walked into Heaven expecting to hear a soft, sentimental lullaby about God’s unconditional affection for all people regardless of their rebellion, you’re going to be very confused.

The angels around the throne - the ones who see God as He truly is, the ones who have never sinned, never rebelled, never been discipled by TikTok theology - do not sing:
• “Love, love, love!”
• “Affirmation, affirmation, affirmation!”
• “Follow your heart, follow your heart, follow your heart!”

Nope.

They cry out day and night, without ceasing:

“HOLY, HOLY, HOLY is Yahweh Elohim Tz’vaot - the whole earth is full of His glory!” (Isaiah 6:3; Revelation 4:8)

Holiness is Heaven’s headline.
Holiness is Heaven’s anthem.
Holiness is Heaven’s obsession.

Why?

Because love, while central to God’s character, is not the foundation of His throne.

Holiness is.

Psalm 89:14 lays it out: “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne.”

Love flows from His nature, but holiness defines His nature.
Love describes what God does.

Holiness describes what God is.

And this is exactly where modern Christianity faceplants - God’s love has boundaries, but his holiness doesn’t.

If I had a shekel for every time someone said “God loves everybody,” I’d have enough to rebuild the Temple!

But Scripture says something very different. God does not love the proud (Proverbs. 16:5), the violent (Psalm 11:5), the wicked (Psalm 5:5), those who hate Him (Exodus. 20:5), those who practice lawlessness (Matthew 7:23)

“God loves everyone” is the hallmark card theology of a culture that cannot imagine God having standards. But holiness says otherwise.

Holiness refuses to wink at rebellion.
Holiness refuses to blur lines.
Holiness refuses to pretend sin is cute.
Holiness requires God to oppose what is unclean, unjust, idolatrous, rebellious, or evil.

That’s why the angels sing “Holy, holy, holy.”

They’re not singing what makes us comfortable, they’re singing what makes God, God. Love without holiness is a golden calf. If angels sang “Love, love, love,” we would create a god in our image by noon.

Actually, we already did… …his name is “Culturally Approved Jesus”.

He’s the one who hugs you but never rebukes you, saves you but never sanctifies you, affirms you but never transforms you, loves you but doesn’t demand obedience, and died for sin but somehow doesn’t care if you keep sinning.

That’s not the Lamb of God.
That’s the calf of self-worship.

The angels refuse to sing “love” without “holy” because love without holiness becomes idolatry.

Real love is defined by holiness. Real holiness expresses itself in love. You can’t separate what God joined.

Holiness is the Attribute that terrifies hell. Let’s be honest - Satan isn’t scared of love. He can twist love. Redefine love. Weaponize love. Use it as a sedative to keep the church asleep.

But holiness?
Holiness is the atmosphere that incinerates him.
Holiness is the fire that expelled him from Heaven.
Holiness is the sword that will judge him.
Holiness is the character he cannot counterfeit.

That’s why the angels declare it nonstop - because holiness is the attribute that secures the universe.

Holiness is what makes Heaven, Heaven.
Holiness is what makes judgment just.
Holiness is what makes the Lamb worthy.

If angels announced “God is love,” demons would nod politely. But when they announce “God is holy,” every unclean thing trembles.
Holiness demands obedience - love alone does not.

People love the idea that “God is love.” They weaponize it to defend lawlessness, lifestyles Scripture condemns, cheap grace, refusal to repent, refusal to obey and the soft, squishy attitude of the church toward righteousness.

But holiness? Holiness calls for repentance, obedience, covenant faithfulness, fear of the Lord, consecration, humility, separation from Babylon.

Holiness draws a line in the sand.
Love invites you to cross it.
Holiness requires you to change as you cross.

The modern church preaches love because love doesn’t demand anything of you. But Heaven sings holiness because holiness demands obedience – it demands everything.

Only holiness makes you fit for the King.

Hebrews 12:14 says: “Without holiness no one will see the Lord.”

Not “without love.”
Not “without good vibes.”
Not “without sincerity.”
Without holiness.

Why?

Because love is God’s gift to us, but holiness is our response to Him.

Love redeems us. Holiness transforms us. Love draws us near. Holiness prepares us for His presence.

The angels aren’t shouting what flatters us - they’re shouting what purifies us.

And, holiness is the fire that consumes Babylon.

Revelation doesn’t end with a giant group hug. It ends with Babylon judged, the Beast destroyed, the nations crushed, the false prophet thrown into fire, Messiah ruling with a rod of iron, the saints reigning, the lawless banished, the Bride purified.

And through it all, Heaven sings: “Holy, holy, holy.”

Because holiness is the attribute that demands Babylon fall.

Holiness is the attribute that vindicates the righteous.
Holiness is the attribute that ensures evil does not continue forever.
Holiness is not optional.
Holiness is not decorative.
Holiness is not a personality trait.
Holiness is the eternal government of God.

Love describes God’s posture toward His people.
But holiness describes God’s identity.

Love can be rejected.
Holiness cannot.

Love can be misunderstood.
Holiness cannot.

Love invites you.
Holiness consumes you - unless you are aligned with Him.

Holiness is the heartbeat of the throne room.
Love is the overflow.

Holiness is the fire.
Love is the warmth.

Holiness is the structure.
Love is the expression.

Holiness is who He is.
Love is what He does.

If God were only love, the angels wouldn’t tremble. But because He is HOLY - all creation bows.

This is the God of Scripture:
the consuming fire (Hebrews 12:29),
the dread sovereign (Jeremiah 10:7),
the One whose eyes burn like flame,
whose voice shakes the earth,
whose presence eradicates wickedness,
whose holiness defines reality.

Nothing can stand in His presence unless it too, is HOLY.

Love saves you.
Holiness changes you.
Both matter, but only one fills Heaven’s worship.

And maybe, just maybe, it's time the church started singing what Heaven sings.

Holy.
Holy.
Holy.
