Language that normalizes experience works because it dissolves the internal conflict trauma creates. After trauma, many people do not suffer only from what happened, but from the belief that their reactions mean something is wrong with them. This belief keeps the nervous system in a state of self-surveillance and shame. Words that normalize experience send a corrective signal: the body is not broken, it adapted. When adaptation is understood rather than judged, the nervous system no longer needs to defend itself.

A common example is the internal statement “Why am I like this?” This question implies defect. It tightens the chest, accelerates the heart, and often leads to rumination. Replacing it with “This response makes sense given what I lived through” immediately changes the body’s interpretation. The word “sense” restores logic and dignity. The nervous system often responds with a softening in the shoulders or a deeper breath because it is no longer being accused. It is being understood. #
