Last week I had a conversation with another long time professional in the communications industry. We agreed that while our advertising / marketing / public relations industry is exciting and rewarding, that the most valuable life experience is spending quality time at home with our children, whatever their ages. Your children are your forever, the buzz and fanfare that our industry creates are fleeting.
With the thought of family and forever in mind, I wrote “Secrets of the Southern Shells” gift book about timeless wisdom passed down the generations from Southern mothers.
In 2010 as the book went to press, I had one of my advertising friends, who also had a teenage daughter at the time, read the short story. We were at a buzzy restaurant. She started crying. I assured her quietly that the little starfish Star in the story would be fine at the end of her adventure. She explained, “If my mother had told me these things in this book my life would be very different today.” We all need a reminder sometimes of timeless wisdom and to know that we are loved.

A Time to Be. I produced three magazines in two markets by myself in the last 12 months. (Count the number of people listed as staff in other local magazines and this will give you an idea of how uncanny this feat has been.) My papaya tree is producing its first blooms. I normally would applaud with a Time to Bloom message. But I feel different the last few days. It’s time to Be. Just Be. A tree doesn’t always bloom. It goes through cycles to produce the sweetness of fruit. And so should we as living beings on the earth. So, I too am quietly producing little white flowers in my own life. I’m being still. I’m joyfully visiting with people I’ve known all or most of my life. These interactions softly nudge me into my awareness of how I should bloom next. A Time to Bloom will come again as it always does. I wasn’t planning to Be this week, I was planning to Bloom, but I am a good listener to my voice inside. A book is being reviewed by a client. Several marketing project clients are vacationing. Online Charticles are in various stages of production. It’s time to just Be. I’m feeling peaceful this week and I hope you are, too.
