Recent acquisition to the LEAF art collection. Black ash basket made by Ben Shinos. He was born on Manitoulin Island, Canada, and migrated to the U.S. side of Sault St. Marie as a child. During the 1960s Shinos served in the United States Coast Guard, and was honorably discharged in 1969. While it is not clear when Shinos began making baskets, by the 1980s his work was being used as examples of traditional basket weaving by several Anishinaabe tribes and museums throughout Michigan. Ben Shinos walked on in 2021 in Marquette, Michigan.
