Instagram has long been huge on the use of hashtags to categorize content from the creators themselves. Listen, I know that I started running out of relatable hashtags around the number 20 mark and 30- heck, I was putting random ones like and .

The head of Instagram has been saying for a while now that the platform is going away from hashtags and, with the burst of Ai this year, it’s no longer needing the help of the end user to figure out what feeds your content belongs in.

So, what should be your new hashtag strategy? Super specific hashtags and well-rounded content. If you’re just makin’ posts about landscaping and using the hashtag “ ”- you might just end up in the feeds of anyone interested in landscaping or those who call themselves landscapes. Instead, focus on more specific hashtags like, “ ” or “ ”.

Make sure your captions are including your keywords vs putting them all in your hashtags and also use your the Locations feature to end up in local feeds of home owners around McLean.

While it feels we have lost an option, I promise you we’ve not. The bots are just takin’ over and now we don’t have to type meaningless hashtags over and over.

Update to Groups: Community Chats will be going away soon

You might run, mod or be in a group that has rolled out the chat feature which allows members of the groups to connect on a more real-time basis. These chats were created by admins and let members of the groups join in on them as they saw fit.

An example of one I was in was a Local Networking Group created a chat for folks who wanted to be involved in the in-person networking events with regards to setup, getting people signed in and so on and so forth. It was like a chapter of a broader book if you think about it.

The issue? You had to be part of that group to access that chat. The new rollout, “Communities on Messenger” will allow non-group members to be able to participate in chats. This is Meta’s effort to bolster Messengers platform as a stand-alone app in 2025 and to simplify how folks community on Meta’s apps.

Community Chats will be paused beginning August 29, 2025 and at a later date, deleted.
