In film school, some are taught, "the bigger and softer the light, the better". One way to achieve this is by using a what's called a "scrim" (the big white square) and pointing the light through it to create highly diffused rays.
Color breakdown from last summer showing just one small step of the post production process. To put it simply, cinema cameras film in a "flat" or "log" profile and must have the color added back in after the fact.
