Area rugs are made of different fabrics. To properly clean rugs, it is very important to determine what the fabric is made of. One way is to check to see if it has a label on the back. If not ask the customer. If the customer doesn't know, then a burn test is required. By snipping off a small piece of fiber and holding it with some tweezers, go to a safe place and ignite the fiber. Every fiber has a different odor .An experienced rug cleaner will be able to identify the fiber by the particular odor it produces. Some fibers have a close resemblance to each other. So another way to determine the identity of the fabric, the ash of different fabrics is different from one another. Why is this so important to know what type of fabric you are cleaning? As mentioned above P H plays an important part in the cleaning process. You can not use a high P H level on natural fibers such as wool. Doing so will damage the natural stain protection that wool contains. Also most rugs and carpets can be cleaned at temperatures a certain degree , doing this will also damage natural fibers. Area rugs should not be cleaned at you home. This is stated by rug manufactures. When they are taken out to be cleaned, they must be hung to dry, utilizing high powered drying equipment Unless you have an ample way to dry them , they will not dry properly in your home.
