Green Horizon Financial
Practical financial planning for retirement, taxes, and real life.
Business owners often have two plans running at once:
The business plan and the personal plan. They are connected.
Cash flow, payroll, taxes, retirement plan design, owner compensation, benefits, and exit timing can all affect each other.
That is why mid-year planning conversations can be useful. There is still time to see what changed before year-end gets crowded.
A few simple questions:
- Is the year unfolding as expected?
- Are cash flow and retirement contributions still aligned?
- Has anything changed around employees, growth, or succession?
The goal is awareness, not a one-size-fits-all move.

Locked Out? How to Break Into Today's Housing Market For many young people today, the prospect of buying a home can seem out of reach.
One retirement tax surprise: Social Security can be taxable.
It depends on the rest of your income.
The IRS looks at a formula that includes half of your Social Security benefits plusother income, such as wages, pensions, interest, dividends, and capital gains.
So the question is not just, Will I get Social Security?
It is also, How does it fit with my other income?
Not exciting but very useful to understand before tax season surprises show up.

What changed since January?
Maybe spending changed. Maybe work feels different. Maybe family, health, taxes,or travel plans shifted.
The numbers matter, but they should still connect to the life being planned for.
A simple check-in can start with three questions:
- What changed?
- What still fits?
- What assumption may need another look
A 1031 exchange is one of those topics people often hear about when a property sale is already moving fast. At a high level, it may allow real estate investors to defer capital gains tax when exchanging business or investment real estate for other like-kind property. The key word is "may."
Two timing windows get a lot of attention: identifying replacement property within 45 days and completing the exchange within 180 days. That can move quickly when financing, paperwork, and tax coordination are all happening at once. For real estate owners, the simple takeaway is this: structure, timing, and coordination can matter just as much as the sale itself.
Social Security sounds simple until the rules start piling up. Age 62 is the earliest most people can claim retirement benefits. For most people full retirement age is 67. Age 70 is when delayed retirement credits stop increasing the benefit. That is a lot to sort through.
The bigger point: Social Security is not just a calendar question. It depends on income needs, taxes, work plans, spouse considerations, and the rest of a retirement plan. No single age is automatically "right" for everyone. Knowing what each age actually means can make the conversation less foggy.
Worth thinking about: when you hear "retirement age," what age comes to mind?
Some business owners spend years looking for ways to reduce taxes.
For eligible business owners, a cash balance plan may allow substantially higher retirement contributions while creating meaningful tax advantages.
It's one of the least understood planning opportunities available—and one of the first strategies many successful business owners wish they had explored sooner.
Have you looked at the numbers for your business?
A recent Gallup poll found that 69% of nonretirees are very or moderately worried about not having enough money in retirement.
That number says a lot about where people are right now. Even when someone is saving consistently, retirement can still feel like a moving target because spending, healthcare, taxes, work plans, and timing all affect the picture.
In the same poll 58% of employed Americans said they expect to work part time in retirement. That is a useful reminder to separate two different questions: Do I want to keep working, and do I need to keep working for the plan to hold up?
A lot of retirement clarity comes from testing different versions of real life, not just the best-case version
Memorial Day week has a way of making the year feel like it
flew by. Soon enough it is July 4th... then Labor Day...
Summer spending shows up before we really notice it. Travel, graduation gifts, home projects, extra dinners out (or ice cream), and a few weekends away starts stacking up fast. It is not automatically a problem. It is just a reminder that real life does not follow a perfect monthly budget.
A simple mid-year check-in can be useful:
- What costs have been higher than expected so far?
- What expenses are still coming in the second half of the year?
- Has anything changed around income, healthcare, or retirement timing?
What tends to sneak up on your budget once summer starts?
