My name is Ed Fenton, and I grew up just outside of Philadelphia. Being involved in Fire/EMS during high school and college is what led me to pursue both a career in medicine and the military. I was fortunate enough to be one of the first OEM residents at Mercy St. Vincent in Ohio. I loved my program, especially being able to do life flight as an independent flight physician working in a small team. I think that experience gave me the biggest advantage going into my first duty station. My first assignment took me to Hurlburt Field, Fl to work in AFSOC at the Operational Support Squadron as a flight surgeon within a SOFME team. SOFME stands for "special operations medical element," which includes a flight doc and 2 IDMT Paramedics who deploy as a team. We primarily take are of AFSOC flyers and support an alert mission as well as down range as a SOCOM asset. What makes this unit great for OGME grads is the CASEVAC mission we also still hold which brings with it unique training opportunities such as weekly trauma lanes, SERE school, Air Command Ground Skills course, and a handful of other training courses required to be deployable. I have had 1 deployment which has taken me to multiple counties in the middle east with extremely diverse and rewarding mission sets. I am very fortunate the OEM residency program has allowed me to become plugged into AFSOC right out of residency, as I feel once you get to AFSOC folks generally want to stay here.
