MANOIL METAL ACTION CANNON
Made in New York, USA • Circa 1930s–1940s
These cast-metal toy cannons were produced by Manoil Manufacturing Company, one of America's best-known makers of die-cast metal toys. Sold through local toy stores, department stores, and neighborhood five-and-dime shops, these affordable little cannons brought big adventures to children throughout the 1930s and 1940s.
The "Metal Action Cannon" was designed to do more than sit on a shelf—it was made to fire! A simple spring-loaded mechanism launched whatever ammunition a youngster could find around the house.
WHAT DID IT SHOOT?
That remains one of the great mysteries surrounding these toys. Despite surviving boxes and years of collector research, there is little evidence that a specific factory projectile was ever included. Children likely used whatever was handy—rolled paper pellets, tissue wads, tiny corks, and yes... even the occasional spit wad!
In the days before video games, smartphones, and electronic entertainment, imagination supplied the ammunition.
A DIFFERENT ERA
Today, toy makers would likely include warning labels, safety instructions, and age recommendations. When these cannons were sold, children were expected to provide their own creativity—and often their own ammunition.
Because many were heavily played with, surviving examples, especially those with original boxes, have become increasingly difficult to find.
FUN FACT
More than 80 years later, these little cannons can still surprise people with how well they work. More than one collector has discovered that a tightly rolled paper pellet can travel much farther than expected!
"A toy from a time when imagination was included at no extra charge."
