How can I help my kid get a job?

I recently asked a 2015 finance and accounting graduate how his job search is going, he replied “ok I guess,” how many jobs have you apply for I asked? He replied, “Enough to keep my Mom off my A**.” I continued, to ask what bothers you about the job market? He replied, “I don’t know, it’s scary, interviewing and being judged by another person and all that.”

Many graduates need help from their parents after graduation and most parents are happy to give it, especially when their kids are working at low wages in their career path to get a foothold. But what about the student like my friend discussed above?

According to Pew Research 1 in 4 students under 26 years of age are going to be living at home after graduation that number will soon be 1 in 3 and the age is increasing to 30. This is a scary fact, especially with over $1.3 TRILLION dollars of debt owed by our students. When graduates are asked what they are going to do after graduation many respond by saying “I don’t know, maybe get a masters.” This of course comes with more debt and is usually a way to kick the can down the road. Obviously, there is nothing wrong with a masters if it will help the student be more productive, but it is often a way to avoid the job market. The real facts are that there is no magic wand to wave when it comes to getting a job, for every job there are probably 50 applicants and to get a job you need to stand out from the field and get noticed, a sweat provoking and heart pounding thought to many graduates.

Interviewing tip- Leave you cell phone in the car. Do not bring the device with you unless you are directed to do so by the company interviewing you. If you are being interviewed and your phone goes off, vibrates, etc, this will indicate that your phone is more important than the interview. Good Luck!
