Northern Cheyenne Chief AMERICAN HORSE was describing the 1876 Battle of the Little Big Horn. The year was 1901, the 25th anniversary of Custer's defeat. (The chief should not be confused with the Oglala Sioux chief known by the same name.)
Historian O.D. Wheeler, right, hired Miles City photographer L.A. Huffman. Wheeler had earlier worked as a topographer in the 1870s, surveying unmapped areas of the Old West. He became best known for traveling the Lewis and Clark Trail in 1904, and publishing his comparisons to the original trip of 100 years earlier. L.A. Huffman also photographed portions of that journey.
William (Old Bill) Rowland, center, had married into the Cheyenne tribe in 1851. Rowland, known as Long Knife to the tribe, served as interpreter. If using a PC, click image to enlarge/clarify. Text and Photoshop restoration of image by Gary Coffrin.
