Tips for Couples

Hi couples. Today’s tip on growing your relationship – respond to your partner positively when they ask you a question, ask for help, or express how they want to connect with you. These are all opportunities to connect more deeply with your partner. You already do this, probably more than you realize, but I would like to encourage all of you to grow in how often you respond even when you don’t feel like it at the moment.

Some of the daily simple questions that are opportunities to respond – “Hey, look at that?” “Can you pass me the …?” And, “What do you think about ….?” These opportunities to connect happen dozens of times a day. Connection does not require perfection – but it is a choice to respond much of the time in a way that makes it a positive connection. Such as, “Yes, here you go,” and “I think …”

Other opportunities sound like, “Hey, why don’t we go out for a walk?” “Let’s stay home tonight; I haven’t had enough time with you.” Your partner is saying, ‘I want to connect with you’ and it is an opportunity to do so.

Then there are the deep requests for connection. Often, they can come across as a complaint or even just a statement. “We never go out together anymore.” “When was the last time it was just the two of us doing something together?” If you hear any of these, you may feel defensive, or even respond with criticism. No matter how you react, get back to the original underlying request. Let them know you hear them about wanting time together, to connect, and that you want it too. Then figure out how to do it.

Connect and grow your relationship. It's the little things every day that make the biggest difference.
