Gender-based violence is a major social issue in South Africa, with high rates of violence against women and children. Here are some statistics on GBV in South Africa.

Intimate partner violence: In 2019 alone, the South African Police Service (SAPS) reported over 177,000 cases of intimate partner violence, with women being the primary victims.

Sexual violence: In 2019, there were over 53,000 reported cases of sexual offences in South Africa. However, it is estimated that only one in nine r**e cases is reported, meaning the actual number of sexual offences is likely much higher.
