Read - 1 Corinthians 12:1-11

“There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.”. v 18

I am sure that most of us react to the idea that we should be changing lives for Jesus, by thinking ‘I am not able to do something like that. I’m just a simple follower of Jesus’.

Peter didn’t think he could either, but He was filled with the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and only then did it happen. It was not Peter that made the difference, but the Holy Spirit pouring into the lame man. But Peter needed to be the one to bring the Spirit to the man.

This is how spiritual gifts work, as described in our reading from 1 Cor 12. The power and ability comes from the work of Holy Spirit, but the Spirit works through us.

The New Testament lists many spiritual gifts, some are practical (helping others), some are prayerful (intercession), some work in the quiet and get little notice (discernment, caring), and others are out in the open (preaching etc.).

The first part of our verse for today says that the gifts are distributed as the Spirit decides. Our job is to discover what God wants us to do to change lives in the world and understand that, if He wants us to do it, then He will provide all we need through the Holy Spirit working in and through us.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I want to make a difference in this world for You. Please show me what You want me to do.
