Today is , and we are marking it with the old vines behind one of our most special wines.

Our Elodie Old Vine Chenin Blanc draws on the Jakkalsfontein vineyard in the Swartland, planted on granite soils in 1986. That makes these vines 40 years old this year, and their age is part of what makes the wine what it is.

Older vines send their roots deeper, carry lower yields, and hold a natural concentration that younger plantings cannot match. In the glass that becomes texture, complexity, and a sense of place that is hard to explain but easy to taste.

We are proud members of the Old Vine Project, part of a community committed to keeping these old vineyards alive.

We’ve had a beautiful season. Now it’s time to rest.

Our Tasting Room and The Kitchen Door Restaurant are closing after 28 June for the month of July - to give our team a break, to do some much-needed repairs and maintenance and come back better than ever.

We reopen on 1 August (which also happens to be The Kitchen Door’s first birthday - lots of celebrating!).

Our online shop stays open through July - with deliveries still taking place within 3 to 5 days.

It's Day!

We have three Chenins worth celebrating at Gabriëlskloof: Synonym, Era & Elodie.

Synonym: Chenin Blanc is, for us, synonymous with South African wine. Delicious and moreish, with fruit sourced from the Swartland and Bot River. Our two Landscape Series Chenins come with names that are a bit more personal - Era René is named after Bernhard's mother, and is made with fruit from Gabriëlskloof. Elodie is named after his sister, made with old vine Chenin from four vineyards in the Swartland. Different soils, different stories, all three worth opening today.

Bot River is genuinely good Chenin country, and we're lucky to share a valley with producers who prove it: Beaumont's Hope Marguerite, Luddite's Chenin, Villion's Henning, to name a few. If today's the excuse you needed to explore what this corner of the Overberg does with the variety, we think that's a perfectly good reason.
