⚠️ RABIES: WHAT EVERY PET OWNER NEEDS TO KNOW ⚠️
Rabies remains a very real threat in KwaZulu-Natal and can affect both animals and humans. It is a fatal disease once symptoms appear, but it is also almost entirely preventable through vaccination and prompt medical treatment after exposure.
We urge members of the public to exercise caution around stray animals. While many stray dogs and cats are simply frightened or lost, rabies can only be suspected once symptoms begin to show, and infected animals may appear perfectly healthy during the incubation period.
Never attempt to handle, catch, or transport an unfamiliar animal yourself.
If you encounter a stray, injured, sick, or unusually behaving animal, contact trained professionals for assistance.
Ensure your pets' rabies vaccinations are up to date.
If you or your pet is bitten or scratched by an animal, wash the wound thoroughly and seek medical or veterinary attention immediately.
Rabies can present in different ways. Some animals become aggressive and unpredictable, while others may appear unusually quiet, tame, disorientated, or paralysed. Because symptoms vary, every potential exposure should be taken seriously.
We would also like to clarify an important point regarding responsibilities. The Durban & Coast SPCA operates under the Animals Protection Act and our mandate is the prevention of cruelty to animals. Rabies surveillance, testing, investigation, and disease control fall under the responsibility of the State Veterinary Services.
The SPCA does not test animals for rabies. Suspected rabies cases must be referred to and managed by the State Veterinarian, who is the legally designated authority responsible for this notifiable disease.
Awareness, responsible pet ownership, vaccination, and prompt action after exposure save lives.
Protect your pets. Protect your family. Vaccinate against rabies.

🖤🤍 URGENT: Oreo Needs a Retirement Home 🤍🖤
Meet Oreo, our gentle giant with the sweetest soul and the kindest eyes.
This handsome senior Great Dane boy has found himself waiting at SPCA Lephalale for a family to give him the one thing he deserves most — a loving home where he can spend his golden years surrounded by comfort, kindness, and love.
Oreo is a special-needs senior, which means he needs a family willing to open not only their home, but also their hearts. He may not be the young, energetic puppy that everyone rushes to adopt, but what he lacks in youth, he makes up for in love, loyalty, and gratitude.
Every day that Oreo waits is another day without a warm bed, a gentle touch, and a family to call his own. Senior dogs often get overlooked, yet they are the ones who need us the most. They ask for so little and give so much in return.
When you look into Oreo's eyes, you see a dog who has loved, trusted, lost, and is still hoping. Hoping that somewhere out there is someone who will choose him. Someone who will see beyond his age and special needs and recognize the incredible companion he truly is.
Oreos don't need perfection. He doesn't need a mansion. He doesn't need endless adventures.
He simply needs a home.
A soft place to rest his tired body. A family to love him. A chance to know that he matters.
Please help us find Oreo the retirement home he so desperately deserves. Share his story far and wide. His forever family could be just one share away.
