We are very happy to unveil the Adult Fiction Shortlist for the SA Book Awards 2022, celebrating books written and published in South Africa, as voted for by South African booksellers. Congratulations to everyone who made the shortlist!

SA Book Awards: Shortlist criteria
Each year a longlist is generated for the categories: Adult Fiction, Adult Non-Fiction and Children’s based on the bestselling titles measured by Nielsen BookScan South Africa. Each title must be published by a South African publisher, written by a South African author and published in the previous year.

The longlist is then sent to South African booksellers to vote for the title they have most enjoyed selling. The published shortlist and winner are based on the bookseller votes. There is an opportunity for booksellers to include a title not on the longlist if they wish.

Voting normally takes place in August and the shortlist is announced in the Autumn.

This beautifully-illustrated, contains an eight-page introduction interspersed with monochrome cartoon illustrations and blue tinted photographs, followed by 64 full-page colour plates of his best-known works.

Edited by the curator of the National Gallery Retrospective, UCT academic Andrew Lamprecht, it includes a series of essays that explore his life, work and legacy by historian Boris Gorelik, art theorist Ashraf Jamal, and Yvonne du Toit, who produced two television documentaries about Tretchikoff.

The foreword is by Stuart Cloete who writes: “He has made more money than any artist dead or alive with the exception of Pablo Picasso.”
