Happy World Social Worker Day to our very own Elnette Du Toit, we appreciate you!
An oncology social worker is a trained professional who supports people with cancer and their families through the emotional, practical, and social challenges that come with the illness.
Think of them as the “bridge” between the medical world and real life.
When someone is diagnosed with cancer, it’s not just about treatment—it affects emotions, family life, work, finances, and daily functioning. An oncology social worker helps with all of that in a holistic manner.
• Emotional support:
They provide counseling to help patients cope with fear, anxiety, sadness, or even anger. They also support family members who are struggling.
• Practical problem-solving:
They help with things like accessing financial assistance, transport to treatment, or workplace concerns.
• Guidance and education:
They help patients and families understand the diagnosis and treatment journey in a way that feels less overwhelming.
• Advocacy:
They speak up for patients’ needs within the healthcare system—making sure they get the support and resources they’re entitled to.
• Crisis support:
If things become very difficult (emotionally or socially), they step in to help stabilize the situation and connect people to the right services.
