Knowing something about websites and basic seo.
We have all heard that content is king and that you should have your website seo optimized. Yes you should, but that is the advanced things and they cost a lot of money. If you are getting it and not paying a lot of money you are not really getting it. Don’t be surprised you are getting what you pay for, get it?
Lets look at the small things nobody is talking about. Your headings, do you have H1, H2, H3 headings and do you mention your keywords in these headings? Did you know this is important? Well it is. It tell the search engine that this is your keyword and then you describe the keyword. It is not just important to the search engine but to your customers as well. It provides a clear description of what the client wants and needs and could mean a sale to you.
Keyword clouds. Yes, it is a nesting of your keywords in a descriptive paragraph. Please do not create a spamming cloud. This means just spitting out your keyword every chance you get. Be creative but descriptive of what you do.
Then there is a little strategy that I came up with myself, it is called branded search optimization. Now what this entails is that you use a unique method to be found, for example, if I say “priceless” who do you think off? MasterCard right? Well that is because they claimed the word through there marketing campaign. You can use the same strategy with your company name, or something unique related to your business or product. There are a few companies that make use of this strategy, for example “dial-a-bed”, now hat they have done is associated the action of picking up the phone and phoning for a bed. So when people need a mattress or are just kidding around the braai, they think of dial a bed. Obviously when they search online they will type dial a bed.
Ok so it is not a new strategy, but I am the first to claim a name for it, branded search optimization, and therefore, just like spotting a comet you get to name it. Besides nobody was using it in the way I teach my clients to use it. If you type in Google search “studentcab”, you will see what I have achieved through my strategy for this small home based business.
Then there is Google analytics, if you do not have this in the java version on your website, stop, and get it done now! This plays a very important role in finding out how people are experiencing your website.
Does your pictures on you website have Alt tags? If not, how would a search engine know what your picture is about? Should I say more?
Your title and description plays a big role, for it is the item that appears in the search result. It should be a comprehensive description of your services or product and should be in such a manner that it would attract a click.
Every site should have a XML sitemap. This is like a blueprint for the search engine and tells the search engine the exact demographics of your website. Without this tool the search engine plays rush and roulette with your website.
In addition to the sitemap you need a robot.txt file. This tells the search engine where it is allowed to go and where not. There are backend files that you don’t want the public to see, of potential spammers to find. It is a good safety measure to take.
Well, this is only the tip of the SEO mountain, and it is already a tremendous amount of work. That is why I continue to say, that having a website, is like having a department in your business and takes man power to run. Do not, I say do not, treat your website just like a add-on service for your clients, but as an extension of your business and operate it in the same way.
